On a mission for Rubes
This sites purpose is to inform people of what Rubina Wong's family, friends and I are doing to aid victims of the Asian Tsunami. Rubina passed away as a result of the Tsunami on December 26th, 2004 in Koh Phi Phi, Thailand . I was on Koh Phi Phi island with my girlfriend Rubina Wong and my sister Christine. Rubina was swept away by the waves while walking with my sister to grab a drink at the seven eleven. About a month later we were able to bring her back home to Canada to her mom, sister and the rest of her family and friends. Right now we are organizing people in Hong Kong and Vancouver to start up a Charity/Trust. As it stands now our mission statement looks like this:
"Our goal is to carry on the love of Rubina Wong and other victims of the Asian Tsunami in a positive and constructive way. We will do this by giving assistance directly and to groups that act to help young victims of the Asian Tsunami. We are most interested in causes that have an immediate impact and are sustainable in the long term."
Rubina, was working at a kindergarten when this happened. She had alot of love for the children she taught and helped. As well for her friends, me and her family. Part of what im doing is trying to carry on Rubina's positive impact on people. We are getting this done by doing research and finding out where we can have the greatest impact in Thailand. I'm going back to the provinces of Krabi and Phuket on March 24th to gather more information and formalize an agreement for the aid work that needs to be done. While there I will be meeting up with other survivors and people helping out. Anyways I'm feeling a little rushed with this, but i will try and make it a daily thing especially while im in thailand........ gotta go teach

Mike,
Jo/Georgina here, we met at Rubina's memorial, I knew her in high school in HK.
I wondered- if you stumble across information about any hands-on aid projects that are open to the public in Thailand - i.e. places where one could actually *go* and lend a building or cleaing or whatever hand, could you post a couple here?
I am having trouble finding decent ones that aren't linked to religious organizations... and I have been wanting to do something aside from just send money to Thailand. It just seems so trite to keep sending money when I'm perfectly able bodied and willing to go over there myself and actually use my own two hands to help rebuild, if, of course, that would be helpful to the Thai people.
Thanks for starting this blog and for letting us all know what you're doing. I wish you the best in Thailand this year.
Thanks,
Jo
Jo Mcfetridge,
I'm happy you appreciate the site. Did we meet? I'm not sure were you at the memorial in Vancouver or in Hong Kong. Anyways I'll updating this site frequently while in Thailand with information about Aid Work and who to get in touch with. If you are interested here is a list of well established charities and Aid agencies that are doing work in Thailand at the moment. Even if you can't work with them, they can point you in the right direction.

Jo Mcfetridge...... I just heard from a friend that if you go to Phi Phi Island you can do work in return for bed and board. I'm thinking it's mostly manual labour. I've also posted a few sites in the links section. www.grassrootsonline.org
